Iconic Marilyn Monroe Home Saved from Demolition in Historic Win
In a landmark decision, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to spare the Brentwood home where Marilyn Monroe resided and tragically died in 1962 from demolition. The decision came after the Marilyn Monroe Collective rallied public support and successfully appealed for the revocation of the home’s demolition order.
Expressing jubilation, the Marilyn Monroe Collective took to Instagram, stating, We have done it! The fans spoke up and demanded action, and it worked. They further revealed that Councilmember Traci Park played a pivotal role in securing the notice to stop construction and the intent to revoke the building permit.
Councilmember Park celebrated the victory by sharing a photo on Facebook, where she can be seen exuding a Marilyn-esque aura with her black dress, pearls, and triumphant smile. She captioned the photo with a resounding WE DID IT! Moreover, Councilmember Park plans to petition for the property to be designated as a historic cultural monument.
During her address to the council, Park emphasized the global significance of preserving this property as a crucial piece of Los Angeles history and culture. She highlighted Marilyn Monroe’s deep connection to the Brentwood bungalow, as it was the only home she ever owned and the place where she tragically passed away 61 years ago. Park passionately described the residence as more than just a physical structure, but as a symbol of Marilyn Monroe’s journey that continues to inspire future generations worldwide.
The campaign to save the Brentwood home garnered support from various Angelenos, including Michelle Walker, who spoke during the public comment session. Walker asserted the importance of preserving Monroe’s home, emphasizing that neglecting the house of such an iconic figure could have broader implications, particularly for Black women. She drew attention to the preservation of the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s home, suggesting that Monroe’s residence deserved the same treatment. Walker stressed that Monroe’s house is a historic and meaningful symbol for all women and the community at large.
