Hurricane-Driven Wildfires in Maui: Deadliest US Fire Event in a Century
Smoke continues to billow upwards, engulfing parts of Maui, the second largest island in Hawaii, while flames dance across the landscape like a raging funeral pyre. While the exact cause of the wildfires remains unknown, the weather conditions on August 8th in Maui were optimal for the rapid spread of the fire. With dry and windy conditions, coupled with winds from Hurricane Dora gusting at speeds up to 80 mph, the fire was able to engulf the island with alarming speed. Additionally, the whole of Hawaii was marked as abnormally dry or experiencing drought on the US Drought Monitor map.
Maui now faces the daunting task of recovery and rebuilding. The resilient island community, supported by local and federal aid, will endeavor to restore what has been lost.
