Hundreds of migratory birds, including Eurasian Spoonbills, Black Ibises, and black-crowned Night Herons, have been discovered dead at Gudavi bird sanctuary in Soraba, raising concerns about possible water contamination. The birds are suspected to have consumed tainted water from the nearby lake, causing their unfortunate demise.

Situated 15 kilometers from Soraba town and approximately 100 kilometers from the district center, the Gudavi bird sanctuary spans 180 acres and is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning lake, covering 50 acres. The sanctuary boasts an impressive 217 different bird species and holds significant archaeological significance dating back to the ancient empire of Kadamba’s Banavasi. Typically, the migration season for these birds occurs between June and December, with the avians returning to their original habitats after winter. However, this year, the sanctuary’s lake has become a perilous trap, with bird carcasses found both in the partially dried-up waterbody and surrounding shrubbery.

Efforts to prevent further avian casualties have been made by the staff at Kargal Wildlife Circle, who released fish fingerlings into the lake. Unfortunately, their endeavors proved to be of little help. Wildlife experts firmly believe that the deaths of these migratory birds were caused by water contamination within the partially dry lake.

Expressing concern over this tragic incident, Murali Manohar, a veterinarian from the Shivamogga zoo, urgently called for a thorough investigation into the bird deaths.

The discovery of hundreds of dead migratory birds at Gudavi bird sanctuary has sparked alarm and highlighted the looming threat of water contamination. The unfortunate fate of these avian creatures, known for their majestic presence, serves as a distressing reminder of the devastating consequences of environmental pollution. As the authorities delve into the matter, it is evident that urgent action is required to identify the source of water contamination and prevent further harm to the vibrant ecosystem of Gudavi bird sanctuary.
