Funeral Home in Colorado Investigated for Improper Storage of 115 Bodies

Authorities in Colorado have made a shocking and disturbing discovery at a green funeral home in Penrose. During a recent press conference, Sheriff Allen Cooper of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office revealed that investigators found at least 115 deceased bodies that were improperly stored at the Return to Nature Funeral Home.

The investigation was initiated after the sheriff’s office received reports of a foul odor emanating from the facility. Randy Keller, the Fremont County coroner, confirmed the reports and added that one of his deputy coroners even developed a rash after entering the premises during the initial search. Hazmat mitigation is now the primary concern, ensuring the proper handling and identification of the bodies.

The Return to Nature Funeral Home, which prides itself on offering eco-friendly burials, describes its approach as a traditional way of burial that excludes the use of chemicals, metal, or unnatural materials. Instead, they advocate for a return to nature by burying the bodies in biodegradable caskets, baskets, shrouds, or even without any formal containment. The website emphasizes a commitment to natural practices, eschewing embalming fluids and concrete vaults.

It remains to be seen whether any criminal activities have taken place. The sheriff’s office has been in contact with the owners of the funeral home, who have been cooperative thus far. Experts from various agencies, including the FBI, are currently assisting with forensic investigations to determine the cause and extent of the improper storage.

The situation at the funeral home has raised concerns about the facility’s owner and their adherence to regulations. The Associated Press reported that the location’s registration had expired in November of the previous year. Regulatory authorities will undoubtedly be looking more closely into this matter in the coming days.

Penrose, where the funeral home is located, is situated approximately 100 miles south of Denver. The disturbing discovery has sent shockwaves through the community and highlights the importance of proper and ethical practices within the funeral industry.

As investigations continue, it is hoped that authorities will uncover more information about what transpired at the Return to Nature Funeral Home and ensure that such mishandling of deceased bodies does not occur again.
