Historically Black Fraternity Relocating Convention from Florida Over Racist Policies

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the oldest historically Black collegiate fraternity in the U.S., has announced that it will be relocating its planned convention from Florida in 2025. The decision comes as a response to what the fraternity describes as harmful, racist, and insensitive policies by Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration towards African Americans.

The convention, which draws between 4,000 and 6,000 attendees and has an economic impact of $4.6 million, will be moved to another location yet to be determined. The move follows a travel advisory issued by the NAACP and other civil rights organizations, warning about the openly hostile laws and policies towards African Americans, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community in Florida.

One of the factors contributing to the fraternity’s decision is Florida’s new education standards, which require teachers to instruct middle school students that slaves developed skills for their personal benefit. This mandate has faced criticism for downplaying the painful history of slavery and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

Willis Lonzer, the fraternity’s general president, expressed the fraternity’s ongoing commitment to advocacy against the assault on communities in Florida by Governor DeSantis. While they are moving their convention from Florida, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will continue to support efforts aimed at bringing about positive change and equality.

Governor DeSantis, who is also running for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, has been criticized for Florida’s new education standards. U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, the sole Black Republican in the Senate and a rival for the Republican nomination, joined the chorus of critics. In response, Governor DeSantis defended Florida, stating that he was defending the state against false accusations and lies.

This decision by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity reflects the increasing dissatisfaction with the policies that impact marginalized communities in the state of Florida. As the oldest historically Black collegiate fraternity in the U.S., their stance holds significant weight and sends a strong message about the importance of inclusive and equitable policies.

Additionally, travel advisories issued by the NAACP, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Equality Florida in May have highlighted concerns about recent laws in Florida that restrict diversity programs, critical race theory, and LGBTQ+ rights. These laws have raised alarms among civil rights organizations, prompting caution against travel to the Sunshine State, where tourism plays a significant role in the job sector.

The decision by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity to relocate its convention from Florida underscores the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. By taking a stand against harmful and insensitive policies, the fraternity is advocating for the rights and well-being of African Americans and other marginalized communities. As the discussion continues, the impact of this decision on Florida’s economy and reputation as a tourist destination further emphasizes the need for meaningful change and a collective commitment to inclusivity and fairness.

By moving their convention, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is using its platform to bring attention to the importance of addressing systemic racism and ensuring equal opportunities for all. Their decision serves as a reminder that progress is made by challenging discriminatory policies and working towards a society that truly embraces diversity and provides equal rights for everyone.
