Melting glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayan mountain ranges could lose up to 80% of their volume this century if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t sharply reduced, according to a report by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. The report also warned that flash floods and avalanches would be more likely while fresh water availability for up to two billion people living downstream of 12 rivers that originate in the mountains would be affected. The study found that the Hindu Kush Himalayan region was being affected by climate change far more than many other areas in the world and revealed that changes to glaciers, snow and permafrost are unprecedented and largely irreversible.
