Hanahan, a small town bordering Goose Creek and North Charleston, has recently welcomed Rick Gebhardt as its new police chief. Gebhardt, a former member of the United States Air Force, was selected to fill the position following Chief Dennis Turner’s retirement after more than 25 years in law enforcement.

Starting his career in law enforcement with the United States Air Force Security Forces in 1997, Gebhardt served in various roles such as entry controller, patrolman, alarm response team leader, and alarm monitor. He was also deployed to Kuwait and Albania during his time in the Air Force. In 2001, he transitioned to civilian law enforcement, joining the North Charleston Police Department. He then worked as a patrol sergeant at the Isle of Palms Police, followed by a position at the Summerville Police Department in 2007.
During his tenure at the Summerville Police Department, Gebhardt held several important roles, including firearms instructor, detective, patrol supervisor, watch commander, SWAT commander, and training commander. With his promotion to captain, he took charge of the criminal investigations division, patrol division, and the administrative division. Throughout his career, Gebhardt has demonstrated leadership, expertise, and a dedication to maintaining public safety.
Gebhardt, who is married and has three daughters, currently resides in Berkeley County. His appointment as Hanahan’s police chief brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to serving the community.
