The viral video clip of a gruesome incident in Gurugram, Haryana, has been circulating on social media with a false communal spin. The 35-second video shows a girl’s lifeless body lying on the ground, with blood stains all around. Twitter users and a Kannada daily added a communal angle to the incident, wrongly claiming that a Muslim man had stabbed a Hindu girl to death. However, an investigation by Alt News has debunked these claims.
The video was initially shared by Twitter user अंजली (@itsAnjaliT) with a caption in Hindi, implying that the incident was a result of the so-called ‘G-had’ virus, and that the Hindu bystanders simply recorded videos without intervening. Another Twitter user, 🚩Mohan gowda🇮🇳 (@Mohan_HJS), shared a newspaper clipping from ‘Kannada Prabha’ with a similar false narrative.
However, an analysis of the incident reveals that the victim and the accused are both Hindus. The accused was identified as Ramkumar (not Abdul), and he was engaged to the victim, Neha. However, the engagement was terminated due to Ramkumar’s misconduct. In response to the broken engagement, Ramkumar stabbed Neha to death. The incident took place in the Palam Vihar police station area, and the accused has been arrested.
The claims that this incident is related to ‘Love Jihad’ or that it involves a Muslim man are entirely false and misleading. The Gurugram Police’s official Twitter handle confirmed that the accused’s name is Ramkumar, and there is no communal angle to the case. ACP Varun Dahiya stated that the incident had nothing to do with religion, but instead, it was a case of a terminated engagement and subsequent refusal to marry.
Therefore, it is crucial to avoid spreading false information and communal narratives based on unverified videos and misleading captions. This incident is a tragic case of violence involving individuals from the same religious background, and trying to use it to fuel communal tensions is highly irresponsible.
It is always essential to exercise caution while consuming and sharing information on social media to prevent the spread of misinformation. False narratives can lead to further polarization and harm innocent individuals who are already suffering from their own personal tragedies.
