Greek Villagers Detain Immigrants in Controversial Arson Attacks Amidst Spike in Migration

Videos showing Greek citizens detaining immigrants for alleged arson attacks have sparked controversy on social media and reignited heated debate over irregular migration to the country.

The Greek region of Evros, which has recently experienced some of Europe’s deadliest wildfires, has become a frequent crossing point for migrants entering the country from neighboring Turkey. Concerns have been raised by local residents that the burned forests will facilitate an increase in illegal entry.

Greece’s Deputy Minister for Migration and Asylum, Sofia Voultepsi, has reported a 65% increase in migration flows this year through Greece, with Evros seeing a particular surge in irregular crossings over the summer. Since June 2023, over 2,300 arrests have been made by local authorities in the region.

Speculation has arisen about the locations and timing of the fires, with some highlighting their proximity to migrant routes and irregular activities. Evripidis Stylianidis, Member of Parliament for the ruling New Democracy party, mentioned the appearance of blazes along mountain trails used by irregular migrants and emphasized that this issue cannot be ignored.

The situation reached dramatic proportions recently when three Greek villagers detained 13 immigrants, accusing them of starting fires near a populated area. A video captured by one of the villagers showed the 13 immigrants being transported in a trailer behind a truck. However, those detained have since been acquitted of the accusations.

In another video released on Monday, Greek citizens in Evros detained four immigrants whom they claimed were arsonists. Police are currently conducting an investigation into this incident.

These controversial events have inflamed conversations about migration across the country, with some commending the Greek villagers for taking matters into their own hands, while others denounce their actions. The leader of the far-right party Hellenic Solution, Kyriakos Velopoulos, defended the villagers, stating that these people are defending their property and arguing that individuals who enter the country illegally must be punished.

The Greek Supreme Court has now intervened, expressing concern over the targeting and racist behaviors towards immigrants. Conspiracy theories, often supported by far-right groups, have emerged, suggesting that the wildfires in Evros are part of an orchestrated assault on the country facilitated by the flow of immigrants in the region. Velopoulos is demanding increased security measures in Evros to protect the country, including the use of anti-tank mines.

While investigations by local authorities and the Ministry of Citizen Protection are still ongoing, preliminary results indicate natural causes for the fires in Evros. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of unintentional fires caused by immigrants attempting to cook or warm themselves. No evidence of organized attacks has been found.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, has taken a firm stance against arsonists, particularly after new blazes appeared in quick succession in the Avlonas area of Attica. He condemned these punk arsonists, emphasizing the endangerment of forests, properties, and human lives, and warned that they would be found and brought to justice. Several individuals have been arrested near affected areas in Attica and are under investigation for attempted arson.

Since the beginning of the fire season, the fire force and police have made 167 arrests for arson, according to Minister Kikilias. The investigations aim to tackle the issue of deliberate fires and protect the country from further damage.

The controversy surrounding the detainment of immigrants in relation to the wildfires has highlighted the complex and sensitive nature of immigration and its impact on local communities in Greece. As debates surrounding irregular migration continue, the country faces the challenge of finding comprehensive solutions that balance the concerns of local residents with the protection of human rights.
