Following the tragic shooting of Nahel, a 17-year-old youth of Algerian origin, in the town of Nanterre near Paris, protests have erupted in France as people demand justice for the teenager and equal treatment from the security forces. The demonstrations have now entered their fifth consecutive day, with protesters taking to the streets across the country.

Last Saturday night, the French police arrested a staggering 719 individuals amid the escalating unrest. Disturbing images and videos circulating online show the intensity and violence of these protests, with participants determined to seek justice for Nahel.

This wave of protests represents a significant challenge for the French government, surpassing even the impact of the yellow vest movement. President Emmanuel Macron’s administration is facing mounting pressure to address the concerns and grievances of the demonstrators.

Until recently, Nahel’s family had largely remained silent. However, his grandmother, Nadia, has now come forward to speak out about the situation. In an interview with BFMTV, she passionately urged the protesters to stop their destructive actions, particularly damaging schools.

Don’t destroy the schools, don’t destroy the buses, because it is the mothers who use them, Nadia pleaded. Expressing her exhaustion, she acknowledged that the situation was incredibly challenging for the family. However, she emphasized that her daughter, Nahel’s mother, was the one suffering the most, having lost her beloved son.

Nadia also expressed her disbelief regarding the support the police officer responsible for Nahel’s death has received. Despite her grief, she acknowledged the importance of law enforcement and their role in society. I have nothing against them. Thank goodness they are there, she said.

The tragic incident involving Nahel has sparked outrage in France and prompted a nationwide debate about police practices and racial tensions. The French government now faces the daunting task of finding a resolution that satisfies the concerns of the protesters while maintaining law and order.

As the protests continue, it remains to be seen how the government will respond and whether meaningful changes will be implemented to address the underlying issues. In the meantime, it is crucial for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards a resolution that promotes justice and equality for all.
