Grand Haven Public Safety Joins Body Camera Trend, Enhancing Officer-Community Interactions
Grand Haven, MI – The Grand Haven Public Safety department is embracing the growing trend of equipping officers with body cameras to enhance officer-community interactions. The department recently secured the approval of the Grand Haven City Council to purchase 10 body cameras and eight camera systems for police cruisers at a cost of $130,210 from Motorola. The payments for this investment will be made over a five-year period.
According to information provided to the council, the department’s current cruiser cameras are eight years old. These will be synchronized with the newly-added body cameras, offering an additional perspective of officers’ interactions with members of the public. Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke expressed that the inclusion of body cameras will provide another valuable view during such interactions.
The cruiser video system, like the existing cameras, will have front and rear facing cameras, ensuring comprehensive video coverage. However, the introduction of the new system brings a significant benefit in the form of Cloud storage for data files. This feature will reduce the burden of maintenance and updates on the department’s current server and software. Council Member Ryan Cummins expressed satisfaction with the decision to add cameras to their systems, as it is viewed as a valuable tool by both officers and the public.
The use of body cameras among police officers is becoming increasingly common, and neighboring areas have already adopted this technology. Muskegon Heights was the first department in Muskegon County to introduce body cameras in 2017. Norton Shores followed in 2018, and in 2020, both Muskegon city officers and Muskegon County deputies were equipped with body cameras. Holland also implemented this technology earlier this year. However, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office deputies currently do not have either body or cruiser cameras in their possession.
The introduction of body cameras in the Grand Haven Public Safety department reflects a broader trend in law enforcement agencies seeking to foster transparency, accountability, and trust with their communities. By capturing video footage of officer interactions, body cameras can provide an objective record of events.
