Girl Scouts’ Terrifying Encounter: Alligator Chases Troop in Texas

A group of Girl Scouts from Troop 114204 in Texas had a camping trip they will surely remember for the rest of their lives, as they found themselves in a terrifying situation when an alligator chased them in Lake Raven at Huntsville State Park. The heart-stopping encounter occurred on September 9 during their overnight camping adventure. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the swimming area was closed down for the remainder of the day as a precautionary measure.

The panic-inducing incident was captured on a cell phone video, showing the girls desperately swimming towards safety as the massive alligator made its way towards them. One of the Girl Scouts, 11-year-old Ava Miller, shared her thoughts with NBC Houston affiliate KPRC, admitting that she believed that day could be her last: I was thinking, this is the day I die. It was moving faster than us or about the same.

According to officials from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the alligator, estimated to be a whopping 14 feet in length, was being considered for removal from the lake. The TPWD has a history of removing nuisance alligators, and they reassured the public that attacks on humans are rare occurrences.

Nichole Glenn, the scout leader, played a vital role in ensuring the girls’ safety by positioning herself between them and the alligator. Glenn reflected on the experience, expressing her unwavering dedication to the troop: I always say that I love them to death. I always say I would do anything for them. Now, I definitely know I would do anything for them.

In a somewhat lighthearted response to the terrifying ordeal, the girls have playfully nicknamed the alligator Karen. Nonetheless, they understand the importance of the lesson learned from this encounter. Scout Erin White admitted, I was close enough to get hurt, and I didn’t even know it was there. So I should probably focus on my surroundings more.

All in all, this frightening encounter served as a valuable reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the need to remain vigilant in outdoor environments. The Girl Scouts of Troop 114204 will undoubtedly cherish their camping trip like no other, as they not only bonded through adversity but also gained a newfound respect for their surroundings.
