Frank’s Hardware in Stevens Point, a beloved fixture in the community for over eight decades, is set to close its doors later this year, marking the end of an iconic legacy. The hardware store, which was founded by Frank A. Klein in 1941, has been passed down through multiple generations of the Klein family, but the decision to close was ultimately driven by Rick Klein’s retirement, at the age of 71.

Frank Klein, who immigrated to the United States from Poland at the age of 13, initially worked at several hardware stores before purchasing Guarantee Hardware in the early 1940s, which later became Frank’s Hardware. He remained actively involved in the business until his passing in January 1957. Following his death, his sons Alois and John took the reins and continued to serve the community.

The hardware store underwent several location changes throughout its history. In 1965, Alois and John acquired the Fisher’s Dairy building on College Ave., allowing for an expansion of the sales floor and a wider range of products. However, due to a downtown project in the mid-1980s, which involved the construction of a mall, Frank’s Hardware had to relocate along with 33 other businesses. Despite the move, the Klein family decided to construct a new building on U.S. 10 East, providing an even larger sales floor, a broader merchandise selection, and ample parking space. The new location opened its doors in April 1984.

In 1991, Rick Klein, the grandson of Frank Klein and the son of Alois, took over the family business along with his wife, Linda, and their two children, Sarah and T.J. Together, they successfully ran the hardware store for many years, making it a cornerstone of the Stevens Point community. Over the decades, their loyal customers became an extended family, with countless stories of purchases made at Frank’s Hardware and the warm connections formed with the employees.

Following the announcement of the store’s closure, customers flocked to Frank’s Hardware to show their support. The overwhelming response on July 18 was a testament to the impact the store has had on the community throughout the years. T.J. Klein expressed his gratitude to everyone who had been a part of the store’s journey and thanked the community for their continuous support, friendship, and laughs.

The closure of Frank’s Hardware not only marks the end of a local business but also the end of a multi-generational family legacy. The Klein family’s commitment to serving their customers with genuine care and expertise has left an indelible mark on the community. Though the store may be closing its doors, the memories and connections formed within its walls will live on.

As Stevens Point bids farewell to Frank’s Hardware, it is a time to reflect on the significance of small, family-owned businesses and the impact they have on local communities. The legacy of Frank Klein and his family will forever remain an integral part of Stevens Point’s history, serving as a reminder of the importance of personal connections and the value of community support.
