France and other European nations are preparing to evacuate their citizens from Niger following a military coup that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum and his government. The neighboring countries of Mali and Burkina Faso have warned that any foreign intervention to restore the ousted government would be considered a declaration of war. This has raised regional tensions and prompted Spain, Italy, and Germany to make plans for evacuating their citizens.

The coup in Niger, the seventh military takeover in West and Central Africa in less than three years, has sent shockwaves throughout the Sahel region. Niger, which had been considered a stable ally in the fight against extremist militant insurgency, is now facing a precarious situation.

Anti-French sentiment has been on the rise in the region, with locals expressing a desire for the former colonial ruler to stop interfering in their affairs. There have been calls for partnerships with Russia instead. In this volatile context, the new military leaders in Niger have arrested senior politicians and warned against any attempts to extract Bazoum from his palace.

In response to the escalating conflict, France has decided to evacuate hundreds of French and European citizens from Niger. The French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, estimated that hundreds of French citizens and other EU citizens wished to be evacuated. Flights were scheduled to be completed within 24 hours. Spain, Italy, and Germany have also made plans to evacuate their citizens.

It is worth noting that France, the United States, Germany, and Italy have troops stationed in Niger for counter-insurgency and training purposes. However, there have been no announcements of troops being evacuated at this stage.

The situation has also strained relations within the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS. ECOWAS has struggled to persuade military rulers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea to restore democracy in their respective countries. Mali and Burkina Faso have now issued a joint statement warning that any military intervention in Niger would be considered a declaration of war against both nations. They have threatened to withdraw from ECOWAS and take measures to support Niger’s army and people if ECOWAS intervenes. The military leaders in Guinea have also expressed solidarity with Niger.

Amidst these developments, Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, has welcomed the coup in Niger and offered to restore order through its forces. The Kremlin, however, has expressed serious concern over the situation in Niger and called for a swift return to constitutional order.

The geopolitical significance of Niger cannot be overlooked, as it is the world’s seventh-largest producer of uranium, a crucial resource for nuclear energy and cancer treatment. While EU utilities have stated that they have sufficient inventories of natural uranium to mitigate any short-term supply risks, the situation in Niger requires close monitoring.

In conclusion, the military coup in Niger has created regional tensions and the potential for further conflict. France and other European nations are taking steps to evacuate their citizens, while neighboring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso have warned against foreign intervention. The situation in Niger is being closely watched as the country’s stability and its role in the production of uranium remain critical concerns.
