Fort Smith Celebrates Homecoming and Gratitude After Battling Wildfires

Fort Smith, N.W.T. recently held a celebration to commemorate its homecoming and extend its gratitude to the first responders who valiantly fought to protect the town from devastating wildfires. The event served as a reminder of the community’s resilience and the importance of coming together during challenging times.

This summer, the Northwest Territories faced an unprecedented wildfire season, leading to mass evacuations that displaced 70 percent of the population. Fort Smith residents, in particular, endured a five-week evacuation period and have only recently been able to return home.

The celebration in Fort Smith saw an outpouring of emotions as people expressed their gratitude for the firefighters, first responders, contractors, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to safeguard the community. Ming Raab, a resident who attended the event with her son, shared her happiness and relief, stating, I was so happy, I was so grateful. Our property was still there and our town was safe.

The evacuation had a profound impact on Raab and many others, leading to concerns about the future. However, the unity displayed by the community and the show of gratitude provide a glimmer of hope. Raab expressed gratitude for the numerous individuals who dedicated themselves to the well-being of their community, remarking, We’re grateful for so many people who worked for us. They contributed so much for our community.

Barry Bernhardt, who had evacuated to Alberta with his wife, also attended the celebration. Witnessing the aftermath of the wildfire’s devastation upon his return made him appreciate the preciousness of life. He emphasized the importance of gratitude and recognizing the blessings the town and its people possess, saying, I’m just grateful for what we have in this town and the wonderful people who live here.

Representatives from the Town of Fort Smith, including councillor Dana Fergusson, Mayor Fred Daniels, and Deputy Mayor Jay Macdonald, were present at the event. Macdonald expressed his delight in seeing the community reunited and emphasized the positive impact on everyone’s mental well-being. He extended gratitude to the volunteers, firefighters, and first responders, acknowledging their tremendous efforts and sacrifices.

Fergusson highlighted the significance of showing gratitude, underscoring the happiness of returning home and the safety of the community. The event also featured a slide show that showcased the work of first responders and volunteers, courtesy of Epéchile Productions, a local production company owned by Pierre-Emmanuel Chaillon.

Fort Smith residents eagerly participated in signing a thank-you note and took part in a group photo to express their collective appreciation for the first responders’ commitment to safeguarding their town.

The celebration in Fort Smith served as a testament to the strength of the community and the power of gratitude. Despite the challenges faced during the wildfire season, the town persevered, thanks to the selfless efforts of numerous individuals. The event not only provided an opportunity for residents to come together and show their appreciation but also served as a reminder of the importance of unity in difficult times. Fort Smith stands as a shining example of resilience and the power of community support.
