Former Minnesota Governor Wendell Anderson, widely known as the Architect of the Minnesota Miracle, passed away at the age of 83, according to a statement from the governor’s office. Anderson, who rose to prominence in the 1970s, died on Sunday after battling Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia.
Wendell Anderson gained national recognition when he appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1973, with a large northern pike and a wide grin, symbolizing the good life in Minnesota. However, his popularity waned after he appointed himself to a vacant U.S. Senate seat, which alienated many voters.
Despite this controversy, Anderson’s contributions to Minnesota were significant. During his six years in office, he implemented what became known as the Minnesota Miracle, transforming the state’s government and education system. He shifted the tax burden from property levies to the more progressive income tax and equalized school funding between wealthy and disadvantaged districts. This bipartisan achievement, regarded as one of the most significant in Minnesota’s history, greatly improved the quality of public education in the state.
Governor Mark Dayton praised Anderson’s legacy, stating that he was one of Minnesota’s greatest governors. Dayton credited the Minnesota Miracle for the state’s exceptional public education system, which attracts and retains top teachers and provides funding for schools in all areas, regardless of property values.
Former Governor Anderson had a remarkable political career that began with his election to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1958. He went on to serve in the Minnesota Senate and chair the 1968 Hubert H. Humphrey for President campaign in Minnesota. Elected as governor in 1970 at the age of 37, Anderson quickly became known for his youthful energy and ability to bridge partisan divides.
Despite his achievements, Anderson’s political ambitions suffered a setback when he arranged to appoint himself to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Walter Mondale, who had become vice president. Voters disapproved of this move, and Anderson was defeated by Rudy Boschwitz, a Republican plywood magnate, in the 1978 Senate race. A comeback attempt in 1984 also failed, and Anderson retired from public office relatively young.
Throughout his life, Anderson remained deeply committed to his home state of Minnesota. His love for the state and its citizens was second only to his love for his family, according to a statement released by his family.
