Florida Deputy Experiences Near-Fatal Fentanyl Exposure During Traffic Stop: Caught on Body-Cam Footage

A Florida deputy had a close call with death when he was exposed to fentanyl during a routine traffic stop. Deputy Nick Huzior, who was wearing gloves at the time, suddenly felt dizzy and his heart started racing. He eventually lost feeling in his legs, prompting his fellow deputy to administer Narcan to counter the effects.

The incident was caught on body camera footage released by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Huzior had pulled over a suspect in Bunnell and discovered a white powder in the vehicle, which later tested positive for fentanyl. The suspect, identified as George Clemons, was arrested for DUI and various drug offenses.

Huzior’s condition quickly deteriorated, underscoring the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily. If not for the swift actions of his fellow deputy, the situation could have turned fatal. Huzior was given two doses of Narcan and was taken to the hospital, where he has since been released and is said to be recovering.

Sheriff Rick Staly emphasized the hazards officers encounter on the streets due to the pervasive presence of dangerous drugs like fentanyl. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper training and equipping law enforcement personnel to handle such dangerous substances.

While debates exist around the true cause of incidents like these, with some suggesting they are panic attacks rather than fentanyl overdoses, the effects of the drug are evident. Users often appear zombie-like, and the drug’s potency and deadliness are widely recognized.

Dr. Lewis Nelson, a medical toxicologist, argues that passive fentanyl exposure is nearly impossible, contending that minimal contact or inhalation wouldn’t cause an overdose. However, numerous instances of officers reacting to opioids have been documented.

Law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant and continue to prioritize officer safety in the face of the ongoing opioid crisis. Proper training, the use of protective equipment, and access to life-saving medications like Narcan will be crucial in minimizing the risks associated with drug-related incidents.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office commended the quick actions of Deputy First Class Kyle Gaddie and expressed gratitude for the good Samaritans who stopped to offer assistance. They also acknowledged the vital role played by Flagler County Fire Rescue and AdventHealth Palm Coast in ensuring Deputy Huzior received prompt medical attention.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced not only by law enforcement officers, but also by the general public due to the prevalence of potent drugs like fentanyl. Heightened awareness, education, and effective strategies are essential in combating the harmful impact of these substances on individuals and communities nationwide.
