Quarantine orders have been issued for a part of Broward County, Florida after giant African snails were spotted in the Miramar area earlier this month. The snails are known to feed on at least 500 types of plants and can cause structural damage to plaster and stucco structures. Additionally, they can carry a parasite that, in some cases, can lead to meningitis in humans. Eradication efforts have already begun, with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services using molluscicide to eliminate the pests. Under quarantine restrictions, it is illegal to move a snail or other regulated items without a compliance agreement. Local authorities have advised people living in the affected areas to be cautious around the snails, which can grow up to eight inches long and five inches wide. The last infestation was documented in 2011 in Broward and Miami-Dade, and took until 2021 to eradicate.
