TAMPA, Fla. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported that a total of 825 firearms were seized at Florida airports last year, marking a slight decline from the previous year. Three Florida airports, namely Orlando International Airport (MCO), Tampa International Airport (TPA), and Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL), secured spots in the national top 10 list for firearm confiscations.
The TSA released a statement on Friday confirming that MCO, TPA, and FLL ranked 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively. The record-breaking number of firearms seized at these airports in 2023 demonstrates an ongoing trend of passengers violating federal regulations.
According to TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz, Every year, MCO, FLL, and TPA are typically in the top 10 or 11 airports across the country for passengers violating federal regulations by bringing firearms to the TSA checkpoints.
Last year’s total firearms confiscations in Florida marked a 3% decrease compared to 2022, as stated by the TSA. Nationwide, TSA officers encountered a staggering 6,737 guns, with a concerning 93% of them being loaded. This statistic highlights the potential dangers of accidental discharge, which could lead to tragic consequences.
Sari Koshetz emphasized that passengers must bear the responsibility of knowing the precise location of their firearms before entering federal security checkpoints. Firearms should not be carried on their person or in their carry-on items. If enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program, individuals caught with a firearm risk losing permanent access to the program.
Most passengers caught with firearms faced legal consequences, including arrest or notices to appear in court. Additionally, they were subjected to a near-$15,000 civil penalty from the TSA. Koshetz issued a reminder that individuals must familiarize themselves with firearm laws on both ends of their journey to avoid legal complications.
TSA officials in Florida have already intercepted 50 firearms in the current year, demonstrating the continuation of this concerning trend. The agency remains vigilant in its efforts to ensure the safety and security of all passengers.
The significant number of firearms confiscated at Florida airports underscores the importance of adhering to federal regulations and ensuring the safe transport of firearms. Accidental discharge incidents could have catastrophic consequences, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and responsibility among travelers.
As the TSA continues its mission to maintain a secure travel environment, it is crucial for passengers to stay informed about firearm laws and comply with all regulations to avoid unnecessary legal trouble.
