Eastbound I-94 Ramp to Northbound I-275 Closed and Detroit McNamara Terminal Blocked Due to Flooding
In a major inconvenience for commuters and travelers, the eastbound I-94 ramp to northbound I-275 in Wayne County, Michigan was closed on Thursday morning due to flooding. The closure occurred following severe storms that struck the region overnight, resulting in several roadways experiencing significant flooding.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the exit ramp to northbound I-275 was shut down at around 7:58 a.m. Eastern Time on August 24. This closure came as both directions of I-275 grappled with flooding issues.
The repercussions of the flooding were felt beyond the roadways, as access to the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport was also affected. Significant flooding was reported, particularly in the Dingell Drive tunnels, preventing travelers from accessing the terminal. Consequently, passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for any inquiries regarding their flight status if they are scheduled to fly out of the McNamara Terminal.
The situation was exacerbated by the substantial amount of rainfall that occurred before 7 a.m. that morning, as reported by the National Weather Service. Southeast Michigan saw between 2 and 6 inches of rain during this time period.
Due to ongoing flooding concerns, five counties in Metro Detroit remained under a flood warning until Thursday afternoon, leaving residents and officials alike on high alert.
While commuters were left frustrated by the closure of the eastbound I-94 ramp to northbound I-275 and travelers faced difficulties accessing the McNamara Terminal, authorities are working diligently to address the situation and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
