The first major snowstorm of the season is set to hit the Cascades, Rockies, and North Dakota, bringing residents a sudden change in weather conditions and prompting them to dust off their winter gear. After a warm fall in many areas, the arrival of snow has caught people off guard.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings about hazardous travel on mountain passes due to snowy conditions and the potential for icy roads as the snow melts and freezes. The storm is expected to arrive in waves, starting with rain in lower elevations of Washington and snow in the mountains. It will then spread across northern Idaho, Montana, northwestern Wyoming, and North Dakota, lasting into Friday morning.

Cold air from northwestern Canada has combined with a moist Pacific weather system, leading to freezing temperatures and significant snowfall amounts. The forecast predicts snow totals of up to 18 inches in the mountains of Montana, with some higher elevations in the northern Rockies potentially receiving over 2 feet of snow.

The worst of the snowfall is expected in central Montana, according to meteorologist Matt Ludwig. He warns that the initial snowfall is especially dangerous as drivers are not yet accustomed to winter driving conditions, such as reduced traction, slower speeds, and longer stopping distances. This sudden shift in weather has prompted residents to schedule appointments to have their snow tires put on and to address any issues with their underground sprinkler systems.

The change in weather is drastic, as Helena, Montana, experienced record temperatures in the lower 80s just last week, which is significantly above average for this time of year. Now, the city and other areas are bracing for up to 8 inches of snow by Wednesday. The impact of the storm has also prompted Helena Public Schools to advise families to check for any school bus delays or cancellations caused by the weather.

The snow is also expected to affect northwestern and north-central North Dakota, starting Tuesday night or early Wednesday and lasting into Thursday night. Areas in North Dakota’s oil field, such as Williston, Watford City, and Minot, could see the heaviest snowfall, potentially 8 inches to a foot. Bismarck is expected to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow late Thursday, following rain on Wednesday.

Snowfall has already been reported in northwestern Montana, including Glacier National Park, and has started in Helena as well. Northwestern Wyoming, including Yellowstone National Park, is also under a winter storm warning. Light snowfall in Alberta, Canada, had tapered off by Tuesday evening.

As the first significant snowstorm of the season, this event serves as a stark reminder for residents to prepare for winter conditions and adapt to the necessary changes in travel and daily routines.
