Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter celebrates her 96th birthday today, while actor-director Robert Redford turns 87. Today also marks significant historic anniversaries, including the birth of Virginia Dare, the first child of English parents to be born in present-day America, in 1587. 1969 marked the end of the iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair, held in Bethel, New York. The three-day festival featured legendary performances by numerous artists, culminating in a memorable set by Jimi Hendrix.

In 1983, Hurricane Alicia struck the Texas coast, leaving a trail of devastation in its path. The storm claimed the lives of 21 people and caused extensive damage, amounting to over a billion dollars.

Turning to 1993, a judge in Sarasota, Florida ruled that Kimberly Mays, the 14-year-old girl who had been switched at birth with another baby, would not have to see her biological parents, as per her wishes. Moving to 2004, Paul Hamm won the men’s gymnastics all-around Olympic gold medal by the closest margin ever seen in the event. However, controversy followed due to a scoring error that cost South Korean gymnast Yang Tae-young the title.

In 2005, the notorious BTK serial killer Dennis Rader was sentenced to 10 consecutive life terms after his reign of terror in Wichita, Kansas. The sentencing brought some closure to his victims’ families and marked an end to his gruesome crimes.
