Farmers in Kurukshetra, Haryana demanded the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India chief, due to sexual harassment allegations. The mahapanchayat on Friday threatened to increase protests and bring the wrestlers back to Jantar Mantar in Delhi if the government fails to take action within a week. Rakesh Tikait, the Bhartiya Kisan Union leader, announced a big panchayat at Shamli in Uttar Pradesh on June 11 and more meetings from June 15 to 18 in Haridwar if Singh is not arrested. The wrestlers tried to march to the new Parliament building last Sunday but were disallowed by Delhi police. The BKU leader compared the current situation to the farmers’ agitation against the repealed laws last year. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to social media to criticize the Centre’s inaction. The Union Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, said that everyone wants justice for the wrestlers, but only after the due process of law. The 1983 World Cup winning cricket team also expressed their support for the wrestlers. The BJP MP postponed his Ayodhya rally on June 5 after the local administration denied permission.
