Dallas Exhibit Sheds Light on Black American Life After Civil War
A new exhibit in Dallas is giving visitors a chance to delve into the lives of Black Americans in the 50 years following the Civil War and emancipation. The exhibition, titled Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow, explores the challenges faced by African Americans during this period as they fought for true equality and full citizenship.
The exhibition, which is sponsored by Texas Capital, opened on July 19, 2023. The opening night featured a discussion on Texas freedom colonies, highlighting their historical significance and how these settlements are being identified and preserved today. Attendees also had the opportunity to enjoy a reception and view the exhibit before engaging with various speakers who shared their insights.
Effie Dennison, Managing Director and Head of Community Development at Texas Capital, expressed the institution’s pride in sponsoring the exhibit. She emphasized the importance of remembering the past as a way to gain knowledge about ourselves, acknowledge the progress made, and continue working towards racial equity in the present.
