Expensive F-35B Fighter Jet Lost in Training Mishap in South Carolina
In a recent training incident, an expensive F-35B Lightning II fighter jet was lost in South Carolina. The mishap occurred during a Sunday training flight when an unknown problem forced the pilot to eject from the aircraft. Fortunately, the pilot escaped unharmed, but the jet has not yet been recovered.
The United States Marine Corps responded to the incident and confirmed that an F-35B from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 501 with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing was involved in the mishap. An official statement from the Marine Corps stated that they are currently gathering more information and assessing the situation, and that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
The F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter program is considered the Department of Defense’s most expensive weapon system program, estimated to cost American taxpayers a staggering $1.7 trillion over its lifetime. Each Marine Corps F-35B comes with a price tag of $135.8 million, further highlighting the financial significance of the jet that was lost.
Following the ejection, the pilot was found in a residential neighborhood in North Charleston and taken to a local medical center in stable condition. The pilot’s wingman safely landed in a separate aircraft, according to reports.
