Stockton Rush, an entrepreneur and founder of OceanGate, a company that sought to explore the deep sea to help researchers gain better access to the ocean floor and unravel ocean mysteries, disappeared off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, while on a third expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic. Rush, a former test flight engineer for McDonnell Douglas and aerospace engineering graduate from Princeton University, started the business with the aim of providing scientists with better access to study deep-sea life using advanced materials to construct a new type of submersible. OceanGate’s vessel, the Titan, which is oblong and made of carbon fiber to offer more strength and buoyancy than titanium, carries five people and aims to offer more room for researchers and deep sea adventurers. Rush was the pilot on the latest expedition, along with four others, which marks the company’s third annual trip to explore the Titanic wreck.
