Enhanced Access for Palmerston North’s Disabled Community Boosts Entertainment Experience

The disabled community in Palmerston North, New Zealand, is now enjoying improved access to entertainment in the city, thanks to various initiatives that have been implemented. One such initiative is the companion card scheme, which was introduced by the city council in partnership with Mana Whaikaha. This scheme allows a person’s helper to gain free admission to selected venues.

In addition to the companion card scheme, Act Three Productions has taken steps to enhance the entertainment experience for blind and low vision patrons. During their recent performance of We Will Rock You at the Regent on Broadway, the production company offered a stage tour and audio feed specifically designed for these individuals. This allowed them to explore the stage props before the show and receive a detailed audio description during the performance.

For Jenni Brown, who is totally blind, the experience was nothing short of incredible. She expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to be part of the backstage tour, where she could touch and feel the stage props, enabling her to build a mental picture of the scenery. During the show, she and other blind and low vision patrons were provided with headphones and skilled audio describers who explained the costumes, non-verbal actions, and body language of the performers. Brown described it as the first time in 20 years that she truly felt like a part of a show.

The companion card has also helped individuals like Brown access other venues and activities in the city. With the support of a companion, navigating crowds and fully understanding the events has become easier. In addition, not having to pay for the companion’s admission has made it more affordable for these individuals to attend shows and consider pre-show meals with friends.

Since its launch in August 2021, the companion card scheme has seen 239 people signing up for the program. Currently, there are 11 venues and activities participating in the scheme. The Regent, Globe Theatre, Centrepoint Theatre, and Focal Point Cinema are among the venues that have already had users make use of the card.

Council community development manager Stephanie Velvin has reported to councilors that although the scheme started slowly, it has proven to be worthwhile and has the potential for further growth. The current trial period, which includes administration costs of $10,000 per year and reimbursing venues for the companion’s admission, will continue for another year. Council officers are also exploring the possibility of a community group taking on the management of the scheme in the future.

The initiatives taken in Palmerston North to enhance access for the disabled community have received praise from beneficiaries like Jenni Brown. With the companion card scheme and the efforts of Act Three Productions, individuals with disabilities can now enjoy and fully participate in the entertainment experiences the city has to offer. Furthermore, the potential for growth and sustainability of these initiatives provides hope for even greater inclusivity in the future.
