Sydney [Australia], May 25 – Following the successful inaugural US-Japan-Philippines trilateral summit and joint maritime patrols in the South China Sea earlier this year, a new multilateral group called the ‘Squad’ has emerged as a counterbalance to China amid rising tensions in the region.
While the ‘Squad’ showcases promise for Filipino policymakers, foreign affairs expert Rahul Mishra emphasized that the Quad, consisting of Australia, India, Japan, and the US, continues to play a central role in regional security dynamics.
The Philippines’ assertive stance against China has been notable, but Mishra highlighted that the Quad faces its own set of challenges, including recent developments related to India’s foreign policy choices and the postponement of its New Delhi summit.
Mishra underlined that despite these challenges, the Quad’s cohesion remains intact. He also emphasized that the Squad, while a localized response to the South China Sea situation, does not overshadow the importance of the Quad.
Moreover, Mishra pointed out that India’s role within the Quad is unique due to its strategic alignment, reliance on Russia for defense needs, and distinct geographic location. Despite differing expectations from India within the group, Mishra asserted that its presence in the Quad is invaluable.
Looking ahead, Mishra suggested that expanding the Quad’s composition to include nations like the Philippines and South Korea could enhance the group’s ability to address evolving regional dynamics.
In conclusion, Mishra stated that while the Squad complements existing multilateral efforts, the Quad’s role with an active Indian presence remains essential in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of the region.
