In Poway, California, a father went above and beyond for his son with special needs. Rick Daynes answered a call for help from the Poway Unified School District, which was experiencing a shortage of bus drivers, causing delays and disruptions to the students’ schedules. Without hesitation, Daynes stepped up and trained to become a school bus driver to help out the community.
What made this story special is that Daynes has an autistic 10-year-old son named Eli who attends school in the same district. Though Daynes took on the bus driver job to help everyone, he secretly hoped to drive Eli to school.
On Eli’s first day back in school, a big surprise was in store. As Eli ran towards the bus, he saw his father behind the wheel and embraced him as he was lifted up in his father’s arms. The touching moment has won the hearts of Americans across the country, including World News Tonight host David Muir.

Daynes was interviewed by Muir while they enjoyed a summer vacation at the beach in San Diego on Monday. He shared that he would be driving Eli to summer school for the next few weeks.
