Detroit Mass Mobs, an initiative aimed at increasing attendance and financial donations for inner-city parishes in Detroit, is set to resume after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first Mass Mob will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Detroit, on June 25. The event is expected to rekindle the enthusiasm that has characterised the movement, citing pent-up demand over the past three years. Thomas Mann, one of the original promoters and organisers of the movement, said We are reminding people where they came from. Their parents and grandparents helped build these churches. During the 2014-19 heyday of the movement, more than 50 historic churches held Mass Mobs and raised over $625,000 in direct offerings during the Masses and other funding through increased awareness. Over time, Mass Mobs have filled many church buildings, bringing people back to church, even attracting those who usually don’t attend mass. After the Mass Mob at Our Lady Queen of Angels, the organizers intend to select new churches where a Mass Mob has not yet been held.
