Title: Deadly Fuel Tanker Explosion in Delta State Claims 5 Lives, Destroys Multiple Vehicles and Infrastructure
Five lives were tragically lost when a fuel tanker exploded on the Sapele-Benin Road in Delta State on Sunday October 1, 2023. The incident, which occurred around 2:00 am, also resulted in the destruction of several vehicles and infrastructure.
According to the state police command, the explosion occurred when the fuel-laden tanker lost control and fell on the road, causing its contents to spill. The tanker was attempting to navigate the failed portions of the highway around the Oghara-Ologbo axis at the time of the accident.
Confirming the incident, DSP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the state police, revealed that eight buses, two tankers, five trailers, two cars, and one motorcycle were completely consumed by the ensuing fire. The fallen tanker itself was also destroyed.
The situation took an even more tragic turn when, attracted by the spilled fuel, a group of youths ventured to collect it using jerry cans and other containers. Unfortunately, an explosion erupted while they were scooping the fuel, resulting in a devastating fire that claimed the lives of five individuals.
The extent of the damage caused by the fire cannot be overstated. It ravaged not only the fallen tanker but also eight buses of various types, two tankers, five trailers, two motorcycles, one Siena Space bus, and one ‘C’ Class Mercedes Benz car.
Authorities swiftly responded to the incident, evacuating the bodies of the victims to the mortuary at Oghara General Hospital.
