Deadly Clashes Erupt in West Bank and East Jerusalem Amid Gaza Conflict
As the world’s attention remains focused on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, an alarming escalation of violence is unfolding in another Palestinian territory – the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In recent days, deadly confrontations have erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces, resulting in numerous casualties and exacerbating tensions in the region.
Since Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel on Saturday, at least 49 Palestinians have been killed, with an additional 950 people injured, as sporadic clashes broke out in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Friday witnessed a particularly violent day, with ten people losing their lives during confrontations with Israeli forces across several locations in the region, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The unrest on Friday was sparked by thousands of Palestinians who took to the streets in solidarity with Gaza, waving Hamas flags, following their Friday prayers. Hamas, which controls Gaza, had called for a day of rage, urging Palestinians to confront Israeli forces and settlers to protest against Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the blockaded enclave.
However, the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has been volatile for quite some time. This year has witnessed the highest number of Palestinian fatalities in almost two decades, with 246 deaths, many occurring during clashes with Israeli forces conducting raids in Palestinian towns. Simultaneously, the number of violent incidents involving Israeli settlers has also reached its peak since 2006.
The conflict in Gaza has undoubtedly heightened tensions in the West Bank, where a portion of the Palestinian population supports Hamas. Moreover, many Palestinians view the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank but was forced out of Gaza by Hamas in 2007, as a subservient entity to Israel.
The recent atrocities committed by Hamas assailants in southern Israel on Saturday have further infuriated hardline Israeli settlers. Calls to arms and confront Palestinians have circulated on messaging platforms, as settlers express their anger and readiness to retaliate.
The situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is undoubtedly grave, with lives lost, injuries inflicted, and simmering animosity on both sides. As the conflict in Gaza rages on, it is crucial to address the deep-rooted tensions in other Palestinian territories to prevent a further escalation of violence and bloodshed.
