Columbia University Student Dies in Tragic Kayaking Accident on Potomac River

A Columbia University student tragically lost her life in a kayaking accident while on a trip to the Potomac River. Ella Mills, a junior from Ireland participating in an exchange program at the prestigious New York City university, was kayaking with the school’s whitewater kayaking club on Sunday when the incident occurred.

According to officials, Mills’ kayak flipped over, and as she tried to resurface, a piece of her gear became entangled on a rock, trapping her face-down in the water. Despite the swift efforts of bystanders and fellow kayakers to rescue her, their attempts were in vain. Mills tragically drowned before first responders could arrive.

Eyewitnesses described the heartbreaking scene as Mills’ kayak capsized while she was navigating the river with approximately twenty-four classmates. Tim Atwell, a local whitewater kayaker, stated that when they reached Mills within seconds, her head was already submerged, making it nearly impossible to save her.

Mills, known for her love of learning and passion for literature, had just recently arrived in New York City as part of Columbia University’s dual BA program with Trinity College Dublin. The School of General Studies Dean, Lisa Rosen-Metsch, informed students of the devastating loss in an email, recounting Ella’s intellectual curiosity and eagerness to explore new perspectives on literature.

This tragic incident has left the Columbia University community in deep mourning. Ella Mills, originally from Dublin, leaves behind her grieving parents, brother, and sister.

Kayaking accidents like this serve as a reminder of the risks involved in outdoor activities, particularly those involving water. While kayaking can provide exhilarating experiences, safety precautions must always be followed. Authorities advise individuals engaging in water sports to wear appropriate safety gear, receive proper training, and be aware of their surroundings.

The loss of Ella Mills is undoubtedly felt by her family, friends, and the entire Columbia University community. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time as they come to terms with the devastating tragedy that has unfolded.

In conclusion, Ella Mills’ untimely demise during a kayaking trip on the Potomac River has left the Columbia University community reeling. Her academic aspirations and passion for literature will be remembered, and her absence will be deeply felt. May she rest in peace.
