Columbia University Student Dies in Tragic Potomac River Kayaking Accident

A Columbia University student tragically lost her life in a kayaking accident on the Potomac River over the weekend. Ella Mills, a third-year student in Columbia’s Dual BA Program with Trinity College Dublin, was kayaking with a group of about 24 people when the incident occurred.

The accident took place in the Little Falls area of the river, near the border between D.C. and Montgomery County. Emergency responders were called to the scene on Sunday afternoon after Mills became trapped under a rock due to strong river hydraulics. Despite efforts from others in her group to free her, they were unsuccessful, and emergency crews arrived too late.

Columbia University’s President Minouche Shafik released a heartfelt letter confirming the devastating news. In the letter, President Shafik expressed deep sorrow for Mills’ family, friends, loved ones, and the students from the university who were present during the tragedy.

Mills was described as a passionate and intellectually curious student. Originally from Dublin, she had recently arrived in New York to begin her studies at Columbia. She had already completed her English Studies coursework in Dublin and was eager to explore new perspectives in literature as a literary scholar.

Lisa Rosen-Metsch, Dean and Professor at Columbia University, shared her sorrow and condolences with the university community. She expressed her deep sadness at the loss of Ella Mills, a valued member of the Columbia GS community, and highlighted Ella’s bright spirit and love for learning. Dean Rosen-Metsch emphasized the support available to students and community members during this difficult period, reaffirming the university’s commitment to providing assistance and solace to those affected by this tragedy.

While this incident is undoubtedly a profound tragedy, it serves as a reminder of the risks involved in outdoor activities. Kayaking can be an exhilarating experience, but it is essential to take safety measures seriously. River hydraulics, in particular, can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

May Ella Mills rest in peace, and may her family, friends, and the Columbia University community find strength during this incredibly difficult time.
