China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Expands to Afghanistan, Boosting Connectivity and Economic Integration

In a significant move, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is set to extend to Afghanistan, further strengthening connectivity and economic integration in the region. The decision was announced during the third Pakistan-China Think Tank Forum, which focused on the Decade of CPEC. The extension of the corridor to Afghanistan, and potentially even to Central Asia, aligns with the shared objectives of connectivity and regional economic integration.

CPEC, a flagship project of President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), remains at the core of Pakistan-China relations and is crucial to Pakistan’s future economic progress and prosperity. Sohail Mahmood, the Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies, emphasized the deep friendship between Pakistan and China, highlighting that the two countries support each other on issues of core interest. Pakistan appreciates China’s consistent support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, and economic development.

Over the past 10 years, CPEC has played a vital role in Pakistan’s economic growth, improving transport infrastructure, addressing energy deficits, and promoting socio-economic development. Now, as the corridor moves into its second phase, the focus will shift towards agriculture, industrialization, special economic zones, mining, science and technology, and information technology.

While celebrating the completion of 10 years of CPEC, it is essential to plan for the future. Sohail Mahmood suggested that China and Pakistan should craft a vision for the next 25 years of their strategic partnership, taking into account China’s technological transformation and its potential to advance Pakistan’s economic modernization and development.

Ambassador Zhang Maoming, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs, emphasized the unwavering support between the two nations, irrespective of the dynamic international politics. He highlighted China’s assistance to Pakistan during times of crisis and expressed China’s commitment to realizing the full potential of CPEC, ensuring high-quality development. In its second phase, CPEC aims to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, mining, science and technology, and information technology, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the progress and prosperity of Pakistan and the entire region.

The expansion of CPEC to Afghanistan marks a significant milestone in regional connectivity and economic integration. It reflects the strong bond between China and Pakistan, underpinned by their shared interests and the unwavering support they provide to each other. The completion of 10 years of CPEC is not only cause for celebration but also an opportunity to plan for the future and further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. With continued collaboration, CPEC has the potential to bring about tangible and far-reaching benefits, transforming the economic landscape of Pakistan and the wider region.
