Chicago P.D. Detective Vega Discovers Dark Secrets in a Chilling Homicide Case

In a shocking turn of events, Detective Annalisa Vega of the Chicago Police Department finds herself at the center of a deadly case involving private eye Sam Tran. Tran’s lifeless body is discovered hanging from a tree in a local cemetery, leaving Vega with the task of unraveling the mysteries surrounding his untimely demise.

While Tran had once been a part of the police force himself, it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Vega suspects that Tran’s murder is connected to one of the three cases he was working on before his death. Two of these cases are chilling cold cases that have remained unsolved for decades. One involves a young woman seeking answers about her mother’s disappearance over 30 years ago, and the other revolves around a man desperate to uncover the truth behind the slaying of his cheating wife and her lover in a motel room over 20 years ago.

However, it is the third case that hits closest to home for Vega. Her own brother, Vincent, had enlisted Tran’s help to catch a mysterious stalker who had been terrorizing his daughter Quinn and other female students on their college campus. Vega’s top priority now is protecting her niece, Quinn, but this task proves to be challenging as the college lies outside of the Chicago P.D.’s jurisdiction.

Amidst the chaos, Vega finds herself teamed up with Nick Carelli, her partner and ex-husband. Together, they must not only navigate the complexities of the stalking case but also apprehend a violent criminal known as the Chicken Bandit, who is wreaking havoc through a series of convenience store robberies while donning a menacing chicken mask.

Dead and Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen is the eighth crime novel in her gripping series, with Detective Vega taking center stage for the third time. Schaffhausen masterfully keeps readers guessing, presenting a myriad of suspects for the stalking case, the cold cases, and Tran’s murder. The author skillfully weaves these storylines to reach a satisfying resolution, while Vega and Carelli also manage to bring the Chicken Bandit to justice.

Throughout the series, it has become apparent that Vega is viewed with skepticism by her colleagues due to an incident involving her own father, a retired Chicago cop, covering up a long-ago murder committed by another family member. Schaffhausen adeptly incorporates this tension into the narrative, highlighting the toll that police work takes on a dedicated officer while exploring complex family dynamics.

Schaffhausen’s narrative is not only suspenseful but also offers a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges faced by law enforcement. The characters, including the numerous stalking suspects, are vividly portrayed, and the writing is taut and engaging. As the story reaches its conclusion, Vega finds herself mentally exhausted, questioning her suitability for the demanding nature of police work. This leaves readers eager to discover what lies ahead for Vega in the next installment.

In summary, Dead and Gone is a compelling crime novel that delivers both thrills and emotional depth. Joanna Schaffhausen continues to captivate readers with her well-crafted plots and multifaceted characters, cementing her status as a master of the genre.
