Crane operators join effort to move massive downed trees after Portland storm

The recent winter storm in Portland, Oregon, has left behind a trail of destruction, with numerous neighborhoods burdened with fallen trees. Efforts to clear the trees have been hampered by the icy conditions, but now, crane operators are stepping in to lend a hand.

Arturo Alonso, a crane oiler with NessCampbell Crane and Rigging, described the situation as severe, with trees down all over the neighborhoods. However, until the ice thawed, cranes were unable to be used to remove the fallen trees from homes.

With improved safety conditions, crane operators are now able to assist families affected by the storm. One such family is Luke Bortnem’s in Beaverton. Three trees had crashed through their second story, narrowly missing them.

We were lucky to escape in time. I saw a large oak tree approaching through the window, so I grabbed the kids and ran downstairs just before the tree hit, Bortnem recounted.

As local arborists were overwhelmed with requests for help, Bortnem reached out to a Utah company for assistance. NessCampbell responded promptly, dispatching a 400-ton crane to remove the trees from their roof.

Appreciating the hard work of the crews, Bortnem acknowledged their dedication even amidst power outages caused by fallen trees. They’ve been working tirelessly to restore power. This neighborhood had power, and then it was lost again due to the trees that fell a couple of days ago. We are grateful for their efforts, Bortnem expressed.

The collaboration between crane operators and affected families proves crucial in restoring normalcy after the devastating storm. By pooling their resources and expertise, they are tackling the challenge head-on.

The involvement of crane operators highlights the importance of teamwork during times of crisis. Their efforts, alongside other emergency responders and utility crews, contribute to the overall recovery process. As they work diligently to clear the fallen trees, neighborhoods are gradually regaining their rhythm and residents’ peace of mind.

The resilience of the Portland community is evident as people band together to support one another. In the face of adversity, their determination shines through, offering hope to those who have been affected. The sound of chainsaws and the sight of cranes in action are symbolic of their unwavering spirit and commitment to rebuilding what was lost.

As the city continues to recover, it serves as a reminder that unity and mutual aid are essential to overcome the challenges brought by natural disasters. Through the combined efforts of all involved, affected neighborhoods are gradually being restored, providing residents with a renewed sense of safety and security.

In the aftermath of the storm, it is heartening to witness the selflessness and dedication of crane operators like Arturo Alonso and companies like NessCampbell Crane and Rigging. Their swift response and tireless work are a testament to their commitment to community service.

As the cleanup efforts persist, Portland remains on the path to recovery, with the assistance of skilled professionals who are vital in navigating the aftermath of such a devastating storm. The resilience, unity, and determination of the city’s residents will undoubtedly pave the way for brighter days ahead.
