Canada has pledged $650 million in support to Ukraine, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks assistance amid escalating tensions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that Canada will stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary. This financial aid will be used over the course of three years for the purchase of armored vehicles.
Zelenskyy’s visit comes at a challenging time for Kyiv as Russia has established robust defenses, including dense minefields, around the occupied territories due to Western allies’ reluctance to provide weapons earlier in the war. Consequently, Ukraine’s counter-offensive, which began in June, has faced significant obstacles.
Notably, some US Republicans have shifted their stance towards Ukraine and are now voting to reduce or terminate military aid. While Zelenskyy was warmly received in Washington last December, his recent visit garnered a more muted response.
Nonetheless, the majority of Americans continue to show support for Ukraine. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell highlighted the importance of backing Ukraine, stating that it is an investment in the United States’ self-interest rather than a mere charitable act.
