Canada Urges LGBTQ Travelers to Be Aware of Potential Dangers in the US

In a recent travel advisory, the Government of Canada has issued a warning for LGBTQ travelers planning trips to the United States. The cautionary message urges LGBTQ individuals to check how they might be affected by recently passed laws in the US, citing a risk of potential dangers. While the advisory does not specify which states it refers to, it highlights that some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. This development comes as anti-LGBTQ demonstrations in the United States increased significantly and legal measures to restrict LGBTQ rights are on the rise.

The Human Rights Campaign reports that over 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in state legislatures in 2023, with more than 220 specifically targeting transgender and non-binary individuals. This year alone, a record 70 anti-LGBTQ laws have been enacted across the US, with many more expected to come into effect before 2024. These laws range from banning gender-affirming care for trans youth to censoring school curriculums and targeting drag performances.

The travel advisory from Canada serves as a reminder for LGBTQ individuals to be aware of their rights and protections when visiting different states within the US. Although the warning does not alter the overall risk profile for the United States, it encourages travelers to check relevant state and local laws to ensure their safety and well-being.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized that the Canadian government prioritizes the interest and safety of every single Canadian, including specific groups facing potential dangers. While she did not reveal whether any talks had been held with the Biden administration prior to issuing the advisory, Freeland stated that the Canadian government closely monitors potential dangers to its citizens around the world.

It is important to note that the United States remains Canadians’ top travel destination, with millions of trips made south of the border each year. However, LGBTQ individuals are now being advised to exercise caution and familiarize themselves with the specific laws and policies of the states they plan to visit.

The issuance of this travel advisory aligns with Canada’s ongoing efforts to closely observe the political climate in the United States, especially as election campaigns for the next leader are underway. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has acknowledged the need for contingency plans and strategizing in the event of a far-right, authoritarian regime taking hold in the US. Joly emphasized the importance of preparedness and collaboration with various stakeholders to manage potential difficulties stemming from different election outcomes.

As LGBTQ rights continue to be a prominent issue in both the United States and Canada, the travel advisory serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity, tolerance, and safety for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Both countries have a shared commitment to advancing LGBTQ rights and promoting equality, and it is essential to work together to create a world where everyone can travel without fear or discrimination.
