California Highway Patrol Shares Dash Cam Footage of Deadly Mahany Park Shooting

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has released never-before-seen dash camera footage of the deadly shooting incident that took place at Mahany Park in Roseville, California. This comes in response to an ongoing investigation by CBS13 into the April shooting, where one person lost their life.

For the past seven months, CBS13 has been dedicated to seeking answers and access to the complete video footage from that day. However, the Roseville Police Department, which has taken over the investigation, has only released 39 seconds of body camera footage, claiming that the CHP officers involved did not have Body Worn Cameras at the time of the initial encounter with the suspect.

Despite this, it was later discovered that the CHP did possess dash camera footage, which CBS Sacramento was able to obtain after persistent requests. The recently obtained 25-minute video seems to start shortly after the suspect allegedly fired the first shots at a CHP officer. In the footage, we can see several undercover officers rushing towards the batting cages, where terrified children sought cover from the crossfire.

This shootout was initiated when the highway patrol made a controversial decision to execute a planned, high-risk search warrant on an armed felon at a public park, coinciding with the peak of spring break, without notifying local police. The incident eventually concluded with local law enforcement coming to the aid of the CHP.

Despite the release of the dash camera footage, local police remain reluctant to disclose the body camera and drone footage, while Placer County refuses to release the victim’s autopsy report. This lack of transparency has raised concerns, prompting many to question what these agencies might be concealing.

In part two of our investigative series, reporter Julie Watts delves deeper into the public’s right to access these crucial public records. By shedding light on the issue, CBS Sacramento seeks to present a balanced view that incorporates various perspectives.

It is crucial to unravel the truth surrounding this tragic incident, and the California Highway Patrol’s decision to release the dash camera footage is a step in the right direction. However, there are still important pieces of evidence being withheld, and the public deserves to know the full story. CBS Sacramento remains committed to pursuing the truth and advocating for transparency in the pursuit of justice.
