Four brave Orlando Police officers risked their lives to rescue a man trapped in a sinking SUV in a heart-pounding rescue operation. The officers responded swiftly to a distress call near the on-ramp to I4 from 408 East, where they discovered an SUV sinking rapidly in a nearby pond. Realizing that someone was still inside, Officers Jeremy Harmon and Gavin Crow wasted no time and sprang into action.
With limited time and the vehicle submerging, Officer Harmon and Officer Crow smashed the front window of the sinking SUV, hoping to give the occupant a chance to escape. However, things took a harrowing turn as water began rushing into the vehicle, causing panic and uncertainty for the trapped individual.
Officer Crow recalls the intense moment, stating, Once Gavin punched the window, that’s when all the water started flowing into the car so we had to pull him out of the driver’s window. I think that’s when he started panicking more because reality set in. The situation quickly spiraled as the man’s panic intensified, posing a danger to himself and the officers attempting the rescue.
Undeterred by the escalating danger, Officers Brian Kissane and Thomas Peterson joined their colleagues in the water, providing support and assistance. They became human buoys, ensuring the distressed man had something to cling onto and preventing him from sinking beneath the surface. Breathing became a challenge as they alternated, desperately trying to keep themselves and the trapped individual afloat.
Amidst the chaos and extreme conditions, Officer Harmon managed to secure an actual buoy that his colleagues had thrown out to them. Yet, even with this aid, the relentless elements continued to pose a threat. We both went underwater. I don’t know if he was pulling me or his weight was dragging me. But at that point, I was trying to swim but there was algae all over my equipment, revealed Officer Harmon.
With their unwavering determination and astonishing teamwork, the courageous officers eventually succeeded in bringing the man to safety, unharmed. Their selfless efforts paid off, and gratitude filled the hearts of the Orlando Police Officers as they reflected on their collective achievement.
Officer Kissane expressed his pride in the teamwork displayed by the squad, stating, Our whole squad being there to handle it and coordinate together. I take pride in that knowing that we can operate as a squad, get the job done, and save a life.
