Border crossings from Mexico experienced a 14% decline in October, breaking the recent trend of substantial increases in unauthorized entries, according to U.S. authorities. The decrease in illegal crossings comes after a three-month period of surging numbers. The resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela played a significant role in the decline, coinciding with Venezuelans becoming the largest nationality appearing at the border, surpassing Mexicans. Arrests of Venezuelans dropped by 45%, and in the second half of October, arrests fell by 74% compared to September. Overall, arrests for illegal crossings from all nationalities decreased to 188,778 in October from the previous month’s 218,763. The decline in border crossings comes as welcome news for the Biden administration, although it is important to continue prioritizing border security measures.
