Beloved music executive Clarence Avant, known as The Black Godfather, has passed away at the age of 92, his family confirmed. Avant was a trailblazer in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports, with his revolutionary business leadership earning him the nickname. His children, Nicole and Alex Avant, and son-in-law Ted Sarandos, released a heartfelt statement announcing his passing.

Clarence Avant began his career managing successful acts such as Sarah Vaughan, Little Willie John, Freddie Hubbard, and Jimmy Smith. His dealmaking abilities caught the attention of legendary label executive Quincy Jones, and the two forged a lifelong friendship. Avant further made his mark by brokering the sale of Stax records and founding his own label, Sussex Records.

One of Avant’s most notable signings was Bill Withers, who he brought on board for his first record deal. Withers would go on to become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member with hits like Ain’t No Sunshine. In addition to his contributions to the music industry, Avant also founded KAGB-FM, one of the first Black-owned radio stations in Los Angeles.

Avant’s influence extended beyond music, as he played a pivotal role in the careers of iconic Black figures such as Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Aaron. Hank Aaron himself once declared, Without Clarence Avant, there is no Hank Aaron, highlighting the profound impact Avant had on the baseball legend’s success. Avant’s contributions did not go unnoticed, as he received accolades such as the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP and the Recording Academy’s Trustees Award.

Tragically, Avant’s wife, Jacqueline Avant, was killed in a home invasion in 2021 at their Los Angeles residence. The couple had been married for 54 years, and her passing was a devastating loss for Avant and his family.

Clarence Avant leaves behind a lasting legacy that has forever changed the worlds of music and entertainment. His influence and mentorship have paved the way for countless artists and professionals. While his family and friends mourn his loss, they find solace in the joy and impact of his legacy. Clarence Avant will be remembered as a true visionary and a beloved figure in the industry he so passionately dedicated his life to.
