Beloved Lihu’e Coach and Community Volunteer Mourned
Lihu’e, July 18, 2023 – The tight-knit community of Lihu’e is grieving the loss of a prominent figure, Peter Paul Rip Rayno, who passed away at the age of 83. Hailing from Kaua’i, Rip was born on November 1, 1939, and spent his formative years in Hanama’ulu. Throughout his life, he made a lasting impact as a coach, athlete, referee, and dedicated community volunteer.
Rip’s athletic prowess was evident from his early years. He attended Hanama’ulu School and went on to graduate from Kaua’i High School in 1958. Sports were his passion, and he excelled in multiple disciplines, including baseball, softball, basketball, and football. As a coach, he nurtured countless young athletes, imparting not just athletic skills but also valuable life lessons.
His contributions extended beyond the field, as Rip left an indelible mark on the Lihu’e community. He worked for the Lihu’e Plantation Company until its closure and continued to dedicate himself to the community by joining Kaua’i Surf and later Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. Rip’s commitment and passion for sports were unparalleled, and he selflessly volunteered his time to support various local initiatives.
Rip’s passing comes as a great loss to his family and the wider community. He is survived by his loving daughter, Joy Nuivo, and his grandchildren Brad Pekelo Dettloff, Ryndie Luana Sarsona, Lyle Kilika Dettloff, Angela Kashmir Cleveland, Makena Rayno, Kolton Makana Medeiros, and Chanler Aikane Medeiros. His brother, Gene Rayno, and sister, Matilda Matty Baldovino, also mourn his loss alongside his sister-in-law, Maggie Amorin, and five beloved great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, August 18. The visitation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m. and burial at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Rip Rayno’s legacy will forever be remembered not just as an exceptional coach but as a compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. His dedication, kindness, and passion for sports will continue to inspire the Lihu’e community for generations to come.
