Dorr’s career in funeral services spanned over five decades and left an indelible mark on the Brunswick community. After graduating from Cherryfield Academy in 1942, Dorr worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center’s tissue laboratory for three years. He then pursued a formal education in mortuary science at the McAllister School in New York City.

Upon completing his studies, Dorr served his apprenticeship at Davis Funeral Home in Thomaston and later at Coombs Funeral Home in Belfast. In 1956, he married Dorothy Howell Dabrio in Bangor and the couple moved to Brunswick the same week. Dorr started his employment at Brackett Funeral Home, where he would dedicate 50 years of service before retiring in 2006. His wife Dorothy passed away on March 21, 1999.

In addition to his dedication to funeral services, Dorr was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Brunswick. He was also involved with various community organizations, serving as a past president and secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Brunswick and as a past noble grand and secretary of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Dorr was also a member of Ft. George Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and the Maine and National Funeral Directors Association.

Dorr’s presence and commitment to his community made a lasting impact on those who knew him. His relatives described him as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son, Jack W. Dabrio, and daughter Cynthia Welp. Four grandchildren, Necole Janczura, Amanda Barnes, Eva Petterson, and Rolf Parelius, as well as six great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, also mourn his loss.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Brackett Funeral Home on Monday, February 5, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. A service honoring Leon G. Dorr’s life will follow at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Interment is scheduled for the spring at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston, where he will rest beside his late wife, Dorothy.

The community is gathering to remember and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who dedicated his life to serving others in their time of need. Leon G. Dorr will be dearly missed but his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
