Baton Rouge is set to expand its license plate reader program as part of the Page/Rice Camera Initiative, developed by the Baton Rouge Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Foundation. The program aims to enhance crime-fighting efforts following the murders of LSU student Allie Rice and 3-year-old Devin Page Jr. The foundation plans to purchase additional license plate readers in the coming month and raise funds for nine more readers in the future. Several local law enforcement agencies, including the Baton Rouge Police and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, already utilize license plate readers to identify stolen vehicles and locate wanted individuals. The City of Central was among the first to implement the technology, with 10 readers currently in place, and the police chief of the City of Central highlights the effectiveness of the readers in solving cases and aiding investigations. The expansion of license plate readers is expected to enhance crime-fighting efforts and increase the potential for combating crime in the Capital Region. The first license plate reader under the Page/Rice initiative is slated to be installed next month.
