Bangladesh is facing transition challenges in its energy, agriculture, and apparel sectors, according to a report by the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). The report, titled The Case for Just Transitions in the Energy, Agricultural, and Ready-Made Garments Sectors in Bangladesh, was prepared in collaboration with Climate Strategies and JT South-to-South and was launched during an event featuring a roundtable discussion in partnership with Dhaka Tribune.

During the roundtable, ULAB Vice Chancellor Imran Rahman presented the report, which highlighted the challenges faced by Bangladesh in transitioning these sectors. MP Md Saber Hossain Chowdhury emphasized the importance of policies informed by excellent research, believing that this report could provide valuable insights beyond academia.

Indian economist Jayashree Roy called for a new direction in the country’s energy sector, emphasizing the need to not solely rely on renewables. Zafar Sobhan, editor of Dhaka Tribune, stressed the urgency of careful planning as Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable to climate change.

The roundtable also featured addresses from Faruk Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and Sultana Afroz, Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh and CEO of the Public Private Partnership Authority.

Bangladesh, being at the forefront of climate change, is in a critical position to address the challenges in energy, agriculture, and apparel. While the government’s research and policies are commendable, better implementation is needed for successful transitions in these sectors. Finding a balance between renewable energy alternatives and other energy sources is crucial. With climate change threatening the country, careful planning is essential for a sustainable future.

As Bangladesh continues to navigate these transitions, drawing insights from robust academic research and aligning policies accordingly is imperative. The ULAB report serves as a significant resource that can guide the country towards informed decision-making and effective implementation of policies in the energy, agriculture, and ready-made garments sectors.
