Parents Warned About Sharing Photos of Kids on Social Media
As the new school year starts, proud parents are getting ready to capture those precious first-day moments and share them on social media. However, law enforcement agencies are urging parents to exercise caution and avoid sharing too much information.
Detective Spencer Stansfield of the Saratoga Springs Police Department emphasized that while posting back-to-school photos is a joyful tradition, it’s important to be mindful of the details included in these pictures. It’s not the photos themselves that pose a potential risk, but rather the signs and chalkboards that often accompany them.
Stansfield explained, What classroom our kids are going to be in, the grades they’re in. That gives us an age and how old they are. The school, their location, the name of their teacher. Sharing such information indiscriminately can inadvertently provide predators and scammers with valuable details that could endanger children and their families.
To address this concern, the Saratoga Springs Police Department issued a warning on Facebook, alerting parents to the potential risks. Earl Foote, CEO of Nexus IT, a cybersecurity company, supported their message by advising parents to review and adjust their privacy settings.
Foote stressed, There are people who use publicly available content of minors for malicious purposes. By ensuring that only trusted individuals can view their posts, parents can reduce the risk of their children’s photos falling into the wrong hands. Foote recommended creating subsets of social media friends, enabling parents to selectively choose who can see the pictures and limiting access to close acquaintances.
Taking a proactive approach toward online privacy can be achieved relatively quickly and effortlessly. Foote estimated that spending 15 minutes to half an hour adjusting settings is a worthwhile investment in children’s safety.
Although there haven’t been specific incidents reported in Saratoga Springs, Stansfield emphasized that the potential for harm always exists. By following the advice of law enforcement and cybersecurity professionals, parents can strike a balance between celebrating their child’s milestones on social media and safeguarding their well-being.
