An Austrian court has approved Ukrainian businessman Dymitro Firtash’s call to reopen extradition proceedings over charges of conspiracy to pay bribes in India to mine titanium. Firtash, who denies any wrongdoing, had been arrested in Austria in 2014 and released on €125m ($136m) bail. A Vienna court had earlier rejected the US request for his extradition, arguing that the indictment against him was politically motivated. The ruling was overturned in 2017 but Firtash’s lawyers got a Vienna court judge to rule that the decision could only be implemented after a defence call to reopen the case was decided. Reopening proceedings would mean the Vienna judges would have to reconsider whether Firtash could be sent to the US.
