Arizona Governor Declares State of Emergency as Heat-Related Deaths Soar: Urgent Measures Implemented to Protect Citizens
The governor of Arizona, Katie Hobbs, has declared a state of emergency in response to a surge in heat-related deaths across the state. The announcement came as extreme heat continued to grip parts of Arizona, leading to nearly 60 deaths in Maricopa County alone this year.
Gov. Hobbs stated that the state of emergency was aimed at supporting local heat relief efforts in Maricopa, Coconino, and Pinal counties, where temperatures had exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit for an unprecedented 30 consecutive days. To address the crisis, she signed an executive order establishing two state-run cooling centers and heat relief facilities on the Capitol Mall grounds. Furthermore, she proposed policy changes to enhance future heat resilience.
In a statement, Gov. Hobbs emphasized the serious health risks posed by extreme heat, including illnesses, emergency room visits, and loss of life. She assured Arizonans that she would utilize all available resources to ensure their safety during the ongoing heat wave and future events impacting the state.
The declaration of a state of emergency followed Gov. Hobbs downplaying the urgency of such action the day prior. She had indicated that her office would consider it if additional resources were required. However, the rising heat-related deaths prompted her to take immediate action.
Furthermore, Gov. Hobbs urged state regulators to ensure safe working conditions for employees and called on energy companies to disclose their plans for mitigating the effects of the heat wave. Her administration has faced criticism for its handling of the unprecedented heat wave. Chad Campbell, the Governor’s chief of staff, previously stated that they would not engage in visible actions without substance.
The record-breaking heat wave, in its second month since starting on July 10, has severely impacted Maricopa County, the most populous in Arizona. The county reported 59 heat-related deaths by August 9, with an additional 345 cases under investigation. To address the crisis, the county’s human services department has collaborated with cities and towns to allocate more funds for cooling and respite centers. They have also invested in repairs for home air conditioners for individuals unable to afford these services.
Forecasts indicate that temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit will persist throughout the week and possibly beyond, suggesting that the death toll will continue to rise. Maricopa County’s morgue is already operating at 63 percent its capacity, prompting concerns about the potential strain on resources.
Across the United States, nearly 30 million people are living under heat warnings as states grapple with rising death tolls and hospital visits due to heat-related injuries. The California Department of Insurance highlights that heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, yet they still claim over 700 lives annually in the country, including many in California. Texas has also experienced a devastating year, with approximately 300 heat-related deaths in 2022, making it one of the deadliest years in over two decades. In June, 13 individuals succumbed to heat-associated illnesses in the Lone Star State.
